Thoughts on Brats...
We finally got to sleep in this morning, which was much needed. We then enjoyed a big
breakfast before heading for Heidelberg. Our bus driver, Hugo, never ceases to amaze us with his bus maneuvering abilities. Mannheim is not made for buses. We finally squeezed our way through the city's streets while Hugo was met with a huge round of applause and were on our way to Heidelberg for a day of sight seeing.
The world's longest pedestrian street led us towards the historic part of the city. From
there we ventured up the mountain to the castle, or schloss, as they say in German. The awe-inspiring views were definitely worth the intense workout we got on the way up. Inside, we saw the world's largest wine cask, and a museum of what was the royal pharmacy. After descending from the castle, many of the students enjoyed bratwurst and other typical German cuisine. We thought our moms made some pretty good brats- we were wrong. Sorry moms. We also helped the local economy with the purchase of our
souvenirs.
We arrived back in Mannheim about an hour and a half before we were scheduled to attend a group dinner at a wonderful restaurant called Andechser Mannheim. An appetizer
of bread, green onions, and turnips precluded huge main portions. Students had a choice between goulash or a hock of pork, each accompanied by potato dumplings. We finished off the night with some delicious apple strudel, ice cream, and whipped cream. Many thanks to Andrew Beadle, who joined us for a wonderful evening, and we look forward to learning more about his company, BASF, tomorrow!
