ADM Plant & EurepGap

Tuesday, May 22, 2007

The day started with breakfast at 7am.  The breakfast at this hotel is more
filling so the day was off to a good start.  We traveled about an hour
away to the ADM Mainz BioFuels Plant.  We listened to two
presentations.  The first presentation introduced the company and
provided a comparison between the companies in the United States and
Europe.  The second presentation went into more detail about the use of
biofuels and the process of creating them.  The group was very
interested in these topics and asked many questions as we have already
been introduced to the topic.  It was unfortunate for we were unable to
go on a plant tour because we did not have long sleeves to protect
ourselves from the chemicals that were in the plant.

Today was filled with driving.  We had about a three hour drive to our
next company visit.  Angelo Lazo presented to us on the Global
Partnership for Safe and Sustainable Agriculture at EUREPGAP.  The
company provides consumers with an outlet for safe, sustainable
agricultural products.

We then spent three hours in Koln.  It worked out well because we were
able to visit the city, shop, and have dinner as well as avoid
excessive traffic on our travels to Rotterdam.  We visited a cathedral
that was absolutely gorgeous.  Construction began in 1228 and was
completed in 1880.  It was the only building in Koln that was not
destroyed by World War II.

It was a two and a half hour ride to Rotterdam.  The night ended with the
students relaxing around the hotel and recharging their batteries for
the intense days to come.
