Jet Lag and Enza Fruit
After arriving in Brussels at 7:45 AM (an eight hour flight + seven hour time
difference), the group traveled via chartered bus to our home for the
next four days. We are staying in the Leuven Institute for Ireland.
After a quick shower for some, Hamish took the group on a walking tour
of the city. Living here for three years, Hamish had a lot of great
comments about the city, its landmarks and lifestyles, and about the
College. One of the coolest sites we saw was the University Library.
After being bombed in World War I and World War II, the University of
Illinois along with many other Universities in the United States helped
to rebuild and refurbish the library. The Library has a stone at the
front entrance with the University of Illinois carved on the stone
pillar. After the tour, the group split up for a quick lunch in the
city.
After lunch, the group boarded the bus and traveled 60 km to Enza Fruit, a
New Zealand company specializing in apples and pears. Greta Knapen,
Operations & Marketing Manager presented information about apple
marketing throughout the European Union. During the presentation, it
was apparent the group was experiencing jet lag. Thankfully, the bus
ride was long enough to allow us all to have a quick powernap before a
free evening out in the city. Most everyone went and ate at a café on
what is the equivalent of the University of Illinois’ Quad.
